Abstract

Encounter killings are nothing but human rights violations, wherein the police themselves execute a person summarily or arbitrarily, instead of bringing him before the Court of Law. In such incidents the police assume the role of investigator, adjudicator and the executioner. This act of the police is now being perceived as quick justice. But apart from it being illegal and contrary to the law, there are numerous problems associated with it. The main reason why people are reposing their faith in this barbaric method of the police instead of the Judiciary is the huge pendency of cases before the Indian Courts. This shows that the condition of the Criminal Justice System in the country is extremely problematic.
