Abstract

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is a deeply rooted cultural practice that involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia or other harmful procedures performed on young girls and women. It begins by exploring the historical context of FGM, tracing its origins to different regions of the world and examining the socio-cultural factors that perpetuate its practice. It then delves into the prevalence of FGM globally, highlighting the countries and communities where it is most prevalent and discussing the variations in types and severity of the procedure. The health implications of FGM are extensively discussed, encompassing both short-term and long-term physical and psychological consequences. Legal frameworks and international efforts to combat FGM are examined, highlighting the progress made in legislation, advocacy, and community-based initiatives. It explores promising strategies aimed at eliminating FGM, including education, community engagement, healthcare provider training, and collaboration between governments, NGOs, and grassroots organizations. It emphasizes the importance of a holistic approach that respects cultural values while prioritizing the rights, health, and well-being of girls and women. It aims to support ongoing efforts to eradicate FGM and promote the empowerment and dignity of girls and women worldwide.
